About Imelda

Imelda Healy was born in and lives in Dublin. She holds degrees in Social Sciences from UCD, History of Art from Trinity College, and a B.F.A. from NCAD. She studied painting as a mature student and won the Symantec Prize for her degree show at the Gallagher Gallery, RHA in 2001.

Imelda was a founder member of Brunswick Mills Studio and Tondo art group. She has exhibited in many solo and group shows in Ireland and California, where she lived in Santa Monica for three years and founded Berkeley Alley Studios, a collective of women artists.

As part of her practice, Imelda has created and run art programs for recovering addicts from the inner city at Merchants Quay, prisoners on probation at Dorset and Irishtown centres and community groups in Ringsend. She curated “River,” a show of work from these groups at the Civic Offices, Dublin in 2005.

Imelda taught drawing classes at the National Gallery from 2007-9 and has been a part-time faculty member in painting and drawing at IADT since 2008.

“Imelda Healy’s gutsy reworking of Greek myths at the RHA is committed, engaged painting.”

Aidan Dunne, Irish Times

“Healy’s paintings often have a feel of uncertainty, and her romantic landscapes capture the fragile beauty of a specific moment that also reflects a curious timelessness, like a snapshot of eternity.”

LA Weekly

“The surging surf and colourful sunsets continue to star as the subject of many artists’ work.  However, Imelda Healy takes it one step further – gorgeous images with a hint of the unexpected lurking just beyond the surface.”
